H.R.6171 – Living Organ Donor Tax Credit Act

Representatives Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Jerry Nadler (D-NY), introduced legislation to provide a $5,000 one-time refundable tax credit to living organ donors who were not reimbursed for the costs of organ donation by the National Living Organ Donor Assistance Center (NLDAC) or any entity.

Financial barriers to living kidney donation may include expenses related to the donation process, such as medical evaluations, pre-operative tests, surgery, and post-operative care. Donors may face costs like travel, lodging, and lost wages during recovery.

Some states provide tax credits for living organ donors. This legislation builds upon this and other programs that support living donors, providing all living organ donors access to financial support through a limited federal tax credit.
