RSN Takes the Renal Teen Prom to
Washington, D.C.
On May 10 the teens will
sparkle like the stars at the first Renal Teen Prom held outside of Los Angeles.
The prom is a special program of the Renal Support Network, a national
non-profit organization for kidney patients.
Staff at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., attended
the Los Angeles Renal Teen Prom in January in hopes of creating a similar event
for teens in the Mid-Atlantic region. Lori Hartwell, founder and President of
the Renal Support Network and creator of the RSN Renal Teen Prom, and Children's
National will be partnering to co-host the prom on the East Coast in May.
“It’s a particularly exciting event for me,” says Hartwell, “because although
the prom is known throughout the US, it’s often very difficult for teens with
kidney disease to travel, so we are now able to bring the prom to them.”
The East Coast Renal Teen Prom will be held at DeMatha High School in
Hyattsville, Maryland, about fifteen minutes by car from Capitol Hill. The
event, themed “Dancing Under the Stars,” is for teens ages 14 to 24 who have
chronic kidney disease and a guest of their choice. The prom attendees will be
treated to dancing and limo rides, dinner and appetizers, glamour photos and a
DJ. Some transportation will be available with volunteer drivers from the area.
One in eight Americans is at some stage of chronic kidney disease. The largest
risk factors are diabetes and high blood pressure. Early detection and adherence
to lifestyle issues can help control the disease.
