DOPPS: Dialysis Outcomes Around the World

On KidneyTalk this week Lori and Stephen chat with Dr. Donna Mapes, an independent nephrology consultant and Adjunct Senior Researcher with University Renal Research and Education Associates (URREA) about DOPPS.

So, what is DOPPS? And why does it matter to kidney patients?

DOPPS stands for the Dialysis Outcomes Practice Pattern Study. This study was developed because there was a concern here in the US about 10 years ago that our kidney patients weren’t living as long or doing as well as other kidney patients around the world, although there wasn’t proof of this. Now this marvelous study reveals just how well we compare to other kidney patients in the other 12 countries studied.

Did you know the police will be called to pick you up if you skip a dialysis treatment in ….? No, it’s not here in the U.S., but listen in to find out which country does this. Oh, wow! Would they come after you?

And what’s the number one country in the world with the longest survival rate of kidney patients? You’ll have to listen to the show to find out.

This study reveals some fascinating facts about kidney patients, dialysis, and different practices throughout the world. Tune in and discover how kidney patients in the United States compare to kidney patients in other parts of the world such as Japan, Australia, and Europe.
