Happy April Fools Day!

Organ Donation is No Joke! Contact Your Legislator to Raise Awareness During Organ Donation Month.

RSN encourages you to contact your elected officials and ask them to become registered organ donors and declare their choice by sharing on social media. Below you'll find some top talking points to share with your local elected officials.

  • 118,000 people in the U.S. are in need of a life-saving organ.

  •  Over 90,000 of these people are in need of a kidney.

  • Another person is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes.

  • 22 people die each day waiting for an organ.

  • One donor can save up to 8 lives and can enhance more than 75 lives through the lifesaving and healing gift of tissue donation.

Dispelling the Myths:

  • Cost of donation to donor’s family: The organ donor's family is never charged for donation.

  • Only young people can be organ donors: There's no defined cutoff age for donating organs. Don't rule yourself out... there have been 94 year-old organ donors and 100-year old bone and cornea donors.
  •  Only very healthy people can be organ donors: Very few medical conditions automatically disqualify you from donating organs.

  • You have to die in order to be an organ donor: You can be a living donor. You can live with one kidney and your liver will regenerate after donating just a portion. You can also donate a portion of a lung, intestine, blood or bone marrow and continue to live a normal life.

Even though 95% of Americans are in favor of being a donor, only 54% are registered. There is an urgent need to bridge the gap by becoming an organ donor. After you register with the National Donate Life Registry and tell your family of your wishes to be an organ donor and share this message.

Say it Loud, Say it Proud!
